We are renovating our old kitchen in our 1922 colonial revival house. The original kitchen was remodeled in 1968, and it is looking a little tired. We are not altering the footprint of the kitchen, as we do not want to change the "bones" of this charming old house.
Our plans include oak inset cabinets, some with glass fronts, one or two with mullioned glass fronts and some with solid doors. Counters will be soapstone, backspash will be subway tile and floor Marmoleum. We have decided on a couple of issues, still have choices to make on others. Appliances will be stainless steel, from GE's Profile Series. Wall colors other than the subway tile are still to be decided, since it'll be easier to choose a paint color when the flooring is set.
Here are some of our options. Note that the subway tile isn't much of an option, since in the non-crackled finish they have only white, bone and black. White and black are too stark, so bone it is!

These stains are very similar; the Cinnamon is a little redder than the Coffee, but really, there is little difference. Current favorite is Coffee. | |||

This is a closeup of the gold mineral vein in our soapstone for our countertop. Some people would reject this, but I love it! |
This is the jade-green vein in our soapstone. I know exactly which counter I want it to go on. |

I love these Batchelder-sytle tiles from The Tile Restoration Center in Seattle. They're sending me a sample tile. |
